Russian Actor Sentenced to 3.5 Years On Charges of Hurting Policeman
The court found Ustinov guilty of violence against a policeman
Russian actor Pavel Ustinov sentenced to 3.5 years in prison on charges of violence against a police officer during a protest in August. Ustinov himself insists that he did not participate in the action at all.
The Tverskoy Court of Moscow found Ustinov guilty of insulting the police and causing bodily harm to an officer of the National Guard during the rally on August 3.
Demonstrators protested against the authorities’ refusal to register opposition and independent candidates for the Moscow City Duma elections on September 8.
Ustinov did not admit his guilt and said that he did not take part in the action, but just stood nearby.
Defense witnesses confirmed that Ustinov did not offend anyone or resist the police, and that, on the contrary, he was beaten by law enforcement officers.
Judge Sergei Krivoruchko refused to accept the videos filmed during the action that the defense wanted to demonstrate.
During the wave of protests, tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Moscow.
Police violently dispersed some of the protests and detained more than 2,000 people, which drew condemnation from the international community.
Several detainees received prison sentences.
