More workers join strike in Belarus demanding Lukashenko step down
Strikes begin in protest against brutal crackdown on street protests
Workers at some of Belarus’s largest industrial enterprises go on strike to protest violence by security forces.
Hundreds of workers of the Belarusian Automobile Plant (BelAZ) in the city of Zhodino left the building, chanting “Long live Belarus”.
Strikes are also reported at several other factories, including the state-owned Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ) and the Minsk Tractor Plant (MTZ)..
Local media cite the words of BelAZ workers who demand re-elections after the announcement of the victory of the incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko amid allegations of widespread fraud.
It is reported that the workers also called for the expulsion of the OMON from the city.
Meanwhile, thousands of protesters continue to take to the streets across Belarus.. Many demonstrators line up in the so-called “chains of solidarity” holding red and white flags – a symbol of opposition.
