Former CIA officer reacts to reports about Kim Jong Un’s health
CIA Director Mike Pompeo said that the next step in the DPRK weapons program could be the creation of an arsenal with the ability to simultaneously launch many missiles
WASHINGTON – US intelligence officials believe North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is a rational and ambitious man who is unlikely to be content with using North Korea’s nuclear program just to maintain his power.
“We believe Kim Jong-un will use the toolkits he has for more than just protecting the regime,” CIA Director Mike Pompeo warned Tuesday..
“Call it coercion – this is how Kim Jong-un is preparing to use these nuclear weapons,” Pompeo said, describing the North Korean leader’s ultimate goal as “uniting the [Korean] peninsula under his rule.”.
Pompeo and other intelligence officials have repeatedly stated that Pyongyang probably only needs a few months to obtain a nuclear strike against the United States..
However, speaking at an event hosted in Washington by the conservative American Enterprise Institute, Pompeo warned that the North Korean leader intends to pose an even greater threat to the world..
“The next logical step would be to create an arsenal of weapons and the ability to simultaneously launch multiple missiles,” said Pompeo..
US officials say President Donald Trump is focused on finding a diplomatic solution to the North Korean crisis.
At the same time, Pentagon and intelligence officials also say they are considering any options to prevent North Korea from using nuclear weapons..
Pompeo declined to answer questions about the possibility of delivering limited strikes to disable Pyongyang’s weapons facilities.
“We’re working on a series of solutions to make sure we can provide a range of things so that the president has the full range of options,” he said..
However, concerns remain that Kim Jong-un may not fully grasp the Trump administration’s resolve..
“We are concerned that he may not be getting enough accurate information,” Pompeo said.. “When some high-ranking leader brings bad news to Kim Jong-un, it may not be safe for that person.”.
“We are taking practical steps that we believe will make Kim Jong-un unmistakably aware that we are committed to denuclearization. We are counting on him to see it, ”said the CIA director.
