Illegitimate Elections: Canada will not to recognize Russian polls in annexed Crimea
EU statement emphasizes that Crimea is Ukrainian territory
The press service of the European Union published a press release on Monday on the elections to regional and local authorities held over the weekend in Crimea.
“On September 13, regional and local elections were held in the Russian Federation. Governor elections were also held in Sevastopol, the document says. – The European Union did not recognize the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by the Russian Federation and, therefore, does not recognize the holding of elections on the Crimean peninsula. Any individuals elected [as a result of] a Russian-organized vote on the Crimean peninsula and claiming to “represent” Crimea and Sevastopol will not be recognized by the European Union as representatives of these territories, which are part of Ukraine. The European Union remains unwavering in its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine “.
Recall that in 2014 Russia annexed Crimea. This action by Moscow was condemned by the international community.
As US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, “The United States rejects Russia’s attempted annexation of Crimea and pledges to continue this policy until Russia returns to Ukraine full control over all of Ukrainian territory.”.
