Former CIA director says Russia was warned not to interfere in election
John Brennan admits that this could ultimately influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election
Former CIA Director John Brennan said at least some American voters have changed their stance as a result of Russia’s campaign to influence the 2016 U.S. election.
His statement went beyond official assessments of American intelligence and lawmakers.
Speaking alongside other former intelligence officials at the National Press Club in Washington, Brennan said he personally believed the Russian efforts had changed the minds of at least one voter..
“Whether it was one voter or a million voters, I don’t know,” he added..
Brennan, who headed the CIA from 2013-2017 under the administration of Democratic President Barack Obama, stressed that he was speaking on his own behalf, noting that the CIA “did not assess” the impact of Russian efforts on voting..
But they undoubtedly produced a certain effect, and, perhaps, influenced the final result – the election of Donald Trump as president, he said..
“How many people, in what states, I don’t know. I don’t know if this changed the election results, ”Brennan said..
Brennan’s comments on Wednesday contrasted with findings released after several official investigations into computer network hacks, leaks, and an influence campaign by Russian hackers ahead of the 2016 U.S. presidential election..
