Coalition stresses that its work is not yet complete
The US State Department issued a joint statement on behalf of the international coalition to fight the Islamic State on the occasion of the first anniversary of the territorial victory over the group.
According to the statement, a year ago the coalition, together with local partners, liberated the last stronghold of IS, the city of Baguz, thereby crushing the territorial ambitions of the group.. “Today, almost eight million people have been freed from the control of IS in Iraq and Syria. Many have returned home to rebuild their lives through various forms of support from the coalition, ”the statement said..
“Progress in our campaign allows us to restructure our presence without compromising our ability to fulfill our mission,” the statement said. “At the same time, the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic to the citizens of Iraq and Syria and our mission have led to temporary adjustments to protect the contingent during this period, in full coordination with the Iraqi authorities.”.
The coalition notes that its work is not yet complete, as the Islamic State continues to pose a serious threat. “The international coalition will continue its comprehensive efforts in Iraq, Syria and internationally, hindering the ambitions of IS and the activities of its units and networks until the work is done.”.
