A woman was killed by fragments from low-quality fireworks; 10 more people were injured
One person died and at least 10 more were injured during the festive fireworks held in Minsk on July 3 – in honor of the Independence Day of Belarus. On the morning of July 4, the Ministry of Defense of the country said that one of the reasons for the tragedy, most likely, was “low-quality charges of 195 mm caliber.” The Belarusian military department also said that the charges and fireworks were purchased from the Russian company Piro-Ross from Sergiev Posad..
According to media reports, at about ten o’clock on Wednesday, July 3, festive fireworks began in the Belarusian capital at six sites: in Victory Park, near the village of Novinki, on the territory of the old airport Minsk-1, near the Chizhovsky cemetery, in the military town of Uruchye. However, already at 22:27 local time, the first message appeared on social networks that the fireworks were launched suspiciously low. Soon after, viewers of the fireworks began to exchange messages that during the launch of the fireworks in the city center, they heard two very loud explosions, after which smoke stretched low above the ground. The blast wave from these explosions knocked out the glass in the neighboring buildings..
The Investigative Committee of Belarus reported that a woman born in 1955 was the victim of one of the explosions. According to eyewitnesses, she watched the fireworks on the banks of the Svisloch River and was wounded in the neck by a metal splinter. Later, the Ministry of Defense of the country reported that the victim received an injury incompatible with life..
A specially created commission under the Ministry of Defense and the Investigative Committee is investigating the causes of the tragedy. The authorities do not exclude the possibility of initiating a criminal case on the fact of the incident.
