NATO Secretary General calls on Belarus to respect human rights

Jens Stoltenberg said that the alliance is not building up military forces in the region, so this cannot serve as an excuse for repression in Belarus

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday called on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to respect fundamental human rights, saying there is no reason to use the military alliance as a pretext for repression.

“The regime in Minsk must demonstrate full respect for fundamental rights, including freedom of speech and the right to peaceful protest,” said Stoltenberg, who is in Berlin for talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel..

“NATO is not building up its military forces in the region, therefore any attempts to use this as a pretext for repressions against peaceful demonstrators are absolutely unjustified,” he said, noting that the people of Belarus must determine their own future.
