Pussy Riot member Maria Alekhina is also charged
The Investigative Committee of Russia has formally charged the head of the Moscow headquarters of Alexei Navalny, Oleg Stepanov, of inciting violation of sanitary and epidemiological rules.
Stepanov, who is currently under house arrest, commented on it this way: “For what actions I can not say, but present – presented.” Navalny’s headquarters believe that the “sanitary case” was falsified and initiated “for the sole purpose of hindering the work of the organization.”.
On Wednesday, the same charge was brought against Alexei Navalny’s younger brother Oleg and Pussy Riot participant Maria Alekhina.
It is expected that in the near future the Investigative Committee will bring charges against four more oppositionists: Lyubov Sobol, a lawyer of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, Kira Yarmysh, Navalny’s press attaché, Anastasia Vasilyeva, head of the Doctors’ Alliance, and Lyusa Stein, a municipal deputy, who was sent under house arrest by the court on Wednesday.
A criminal case on violation of sanitary rules was opened after the actions in support of Alexei Navalny, which took place on January 23 in more than a hundred Russian cities. Another case under the same article was opened by the Investigative Committee after the same actions on January 31.
According to the Investigative Committee, the defendants called on social media to go out to protest in the center of Moscow. The investigation claims that, responding to the call, people arrived there who were supposed to stay at home on self-isolation. The headquarters for the fight against coronavirus said that 19 people who were diagnosed with COVID-19 came to Pushkin Square.
The article of the Criminal Code on violation of sanitary and epidemiological rules provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for a period of up to two years, and if the violations led by negligence to the death of people, the perpetrators can be imprisoned for up to seven years.
