NEW YORK – NYPD interrogates a person of interest in a series of subway knife attacks that killed two people.
This was announced on Sunday by representatives of the authorities.
“The person of interest is currently being questioned in connection with the knife attacks on the subway,” said New York City Police Department detective Martin Brown.
Brown declined to say when the man was taken into custody and whether he is a suspect in one or more of four attacks that have occurred since Friday on trains or at stations on one of the New York subway lines, and apparently targeted the homeless..
Local radio station 1010WINS said, citing police sources, that the suspect is a man who was taken into custody Saturday night wearing bloody clothes and shoes..
A 67-year-old man injured in the first attack is recovering in hospital after being attacked with a knife by a masked man, police said.
A few hours later, a man was found on a subway train who died from stab wounds.
Then a 44-year-old woman was found unconscious with stab wounds. The hospital pronounced her death.
The fourth victim was a 43-year-old man who was attacked on Saturday night. The police said that after undergoing surgery, he is in stable condition.
New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shay told reporters Saturday that 500 additional officers have been deployed to work on the city’s public transportation system “to make people feel safe.”.
