Boris Nemtsov murder ‘a wake-up call’ on state of Putin’s Russia | Channel 4 News
Russian opposition plans to hold a mass rally in Moscow in memory of the famous politician
On Thursday, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) called for a “new and full investigation” of the killing of one of the leaders of the Russian democratic opposition Boris Nemtsov. He was shot dead late in the evening on February 27, 2015 in the Russian capital, on the Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge, near the Kremlin.
In June 2017, a Russian court sentenced the former deputy commander of the Chechen battalion Zaur Dadaev to 20 years in prison for the murder of Nemtsov. Four other persons (ethnic Chechens) were found to be involved in this murder and received various sentences, from 11 to 19 years..
The OSCE believes that due to the limited nature of the Russian investigation, many questions related to this political assassination remained unanswered.
“His death was a tragedy for Russia and had a profound effect on the political climate, creating fear and possibly opening the way for further attacks and repression,” reads the February 20 OSCE report, cited by Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty. … (RFERL).
Kremlin critics point out that Russian justice was never really able to find out who ordered the murder.. Independent experts suspect that people from the circle of Russian President Vladimir Putin or the head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov could have been involved in this crime..
Nemtsov’s supporters, including representatives of the Russian opposition, plan to hold a mass rally in Moscow on February 29 to mark the fifth anniversary of the politician’s death.
