New York police have increased their patrols in parts of Brooklyn, which are predominantly Jewish, after a series of attacks that may have been motivated by anti-Semitism during the Hanukkah celebrations. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said this on Friday.

Miami resident Steven Jorge was charged Monday with a hate attack. Jorge, 28, shouted anti-Semitic lines and attacked a 65-year-old man in midtown Manhattan, police said. According to a spokesman for the anti-Semitism group, the victim was wearing a yarmulke, a traditional Jewish men’s headdress. Jorge is now under arrest awaiting psychiatric examination.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announces the creation of a working group to investigate hate crimes at the state level. The group will help city police investigate “horrific and cowardly manifestations of anti-Semitism,” Cuomo said.
