Pompeo: ‘Reckless’ for ICC to authorize Afghanistan war crimes probe | AFP
The secretary of state called the move particularly irresponsible against the backdrop of the recently signed agreement between the US and the Taliban.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo criticizes the decision of the International Criminal Court of Appeals to investigate possible crimes by the Taliban, the US and the Afghan army in Afghanistan.
“This is truly an astounding move by an irresponsible political institution masquerading as a legal body,” Pompeo said..
According to Pompeo, the decision is particularly ill-advised because it was taken just days after the United States signed a “historic peace agreement on Afghanistan that is the best chance of peace in a generation.”.
The Secretary of State recalled that the Afghan government called on the ICC not to go in this direction, but “politicians at the ICC have other goals.”.
“The United States is not a member of the ICC, and we will take all necessary measures to protect our citizens from this apostate, so-called judgment,” Pompeo said..
“This serves as another reminder of what happens when multilateral bodies lack control and responsible leadership and become instruments of political vendetta,” Pompeo added. “The ICC today sadly confirmed everything that its most ardent critics have said over the past three decades.”.
