US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev on Friday. The meeting will take place just weeks after the US House of Representatives approved articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, accusing him of abuse of power when dealing with Ukraine..
According to the State Department, Pompeo will also meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Defense of Ukraine and assure them that the United States supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine..
Recall that in 2014 Russia annexed the Crimea peninsula belonging to Ukraine. In the same year, pro-Russian separatist unrest began in eastern Ukraine.
It is not yet clear if Trump’s impeachment will be discussed during Pompeo’s visit to Ukraine.
A House investigation concluded that Trump withheld military aid allocated to Ukraine in order to pressure Kiev into an investigation into one of his political rivals, Democrat Joe Biden.
During Pompeo’s visit, issues related to human rights, the investment climate and planned reforms will also be discussed..
