Explainer: Why Xinjiang is so important to China
In addition to Russia, representatives of North Korea, Venezuela, Cuba, Belarus and more than 30 other states signed the appeal on Beijing’s achievements in the field of human rights protection at the UN
Russia, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, North Korea, Belarus, Syria and more than 30 other countries have addressed the UN with a collective letter, supporting the policy pursued by Beijing in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the west of the PRC. A copy of the appeal was at the disposal of Reuters on Friday.
Last Wednesday, it became known that 22 Western countries turned to the UN Human Rights Council with a return request, urging China to end the mass detentions of ethnic Uighurs and Muslims in Xinjiang.
However, the authors of the letter in support of Beijing’s actions declared China’s “outstanding achievements in the field of human rights.”.
“Faced with the serious problem of terrorism and extremism, China has taken a number of measures to combat terrorism and radicalism in Xinjiang, including by creating vocational education and training centers,” the letter, which was signed by Russian representatives to the UN.
Letter Says Xinjiang Respects Fundamental Rights of All Ethnic Groups. In addition, Beijing’s actions have led to increased security in the region, the authors of the appeal say. They remind that over the past three years not a single terrorist attack has occurred in the region.. Residents of the region have the opportunity to “enjoy feelings of happiness, satisfaction and security,” the appeal says..
The letter was signed by representatives of many African countries, Cuba, Myanmar, the Philippines, and a number of Muslim states, including Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Syria.
Official Beijing denies accusations of massive human rights violations and the creation of concentration camps or detention centers in Xinjiang. Xu Chen, Permanent Representative of the People’s Republic of China to the UN, speaking on Friday at the closing session of the UN Human Rights Council, said that the Chinese authorities “highly appreciate the support” received from the authors of the appeal.
