President Donald Trump fires Defense Secretary Mark Esper
Kevin Sweeney’s resignation announcement comes a few days after the departure of Pentagon chief James Mattis
U.S. Department of Defense chief of staff Rear Admiral Kevin Sweeney resigns, Pentagon said on Saturday.
Sweeney has held this position since January 2017..
“After two years at the Pentagon, I decided it was time to return to the private sector.. It was a great honor for me to serve again among the men and women of the Department of Defense, ”Sweeney said in a statement..
Sweeney’s resignation was preceded by the departure of some other senior defense officials..
Secretary of Defense James Mattis, who worked for Sweeney, stepped down earlier this month..
Mattis announced his resignation in late December, shortly after President Donald Trump announced that the United States would withdraw some 2,000 troops from Syria. In his letter, in which he did not mention Trump by name, Mattis noted a significant difference in views between him and the president, in particular on the importance of allies and the use of American power..
“We need to be decisive and unambiguous in our approach to countries whose strategic interests are increasingly in conflict with ours,” wrote Mattis.
In particular, he warned that Russia and China “want to form a world that would correspond to their authoritarian model, having received the right to veto decisions of other countries in the field of economy, diplomacy and security.”.
Mattis said he was ready to serve until the end of February, but on December 23, Trump announced that Patrick Shanahan would become acting minister on January 1, thus accelerating Mattis’s departure. Under Mattis Shanahan served as Deputy Secretary of Defense.
Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White also resigned, leaving the ministry in late December..
“I appreciate the opportunity this administration has given me to work alongside Minister Mattis and our military and civilians who support them.. It was a great honor and privilege for me. Take care of yourself and God bless you, “White tweeted, according to CNN..
