US urges China to close markets selling wildlife products

Coronavirus epidemic is believed to have started in one such market in Wuhan

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US has called on China to permanently close markets selling wildlife products, citing links to zoonotic diseases..

The novel coronavirus is believed to have originated in the market in Wuhan, China late last year.

“Given the strong link between the illegal sale of wild animals in such markets and zoonotic diseases, the United States has called on the PRC to permanently close markets that sell raw wildlife products and all markets that illegally trade wildlife products,” Pompeo said in a statement released in Wednesday.
